120 Days Lockdown

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, South Africa has been in lockdown since the 26th March, that’s around 120 days or 4 months of our lives with very restricted movement. I don’t want to get into too much detail about the state of things in our country and around the world, but rather express my thoughts as it stands now. Needless to say, my views change on the daily, 2020 has been a monster of a year.

  • I’m totally okay staying at home for long periods of time, honestly don’t miss nearly as much as others do.
  • Crime is on it’s way up. I’m honestly surprised it took this long, but people are getting desperate.
  • There doesn’t seem to be any solid scientific progress on the virus 🦠
  • I don’t understand why people can’t wear masks, if not for themselves, but for people around them.
  • I have so much respect for female leadership around the globe. Women are doing it better. Huge respect!
  • American news seems to dominate the headlines. What an absolute mess they’re in.
  • I find the love of money as a possession absolutely gross. There needs to be a huge moral shift to where the money is a means and people are the benefactors of spreading it around.
  • Work is scarce locally and I’m considering leaving as soon as I can.
  • A reminder that Black Lives Matter.
  • Wear a fucking mask.
  • Be kind.
  • Gender-Based Violence is something all men better start dealing with.
  • I’ve made a couple of YouTube videos that I just can’t finish editing and have pretty much abandoned. Subscribe to my channel, maybe it will motivate me.
  • I have been enjoying late nights coding the front-end of my website. I wish there was more money in doing this for a living.
  • Writing project information for my portfolio is a weakness. But I try harder every day.
  • Recruitment needs a rethink. Getting tired of filling out endless profiles on sites that a just regurgitating what’s already on my CV and my website.
  • The number of people trying to sell me stuff on LinkedIn is starting to get invasive and I am blocking folks. It’s for networking, not sales.
  • Its much harder doing nothing and having no work than it is being too busy.
  • The abuse of trending hashtags on twitter will probably break the platform.
  • Anyone else felt like packing it all in and moving somewhere remote and living off-grid?
  • Homeschooling has proven to be better for my son and we are considering taking him out of private school.
  • If you want to save money and build a better product, stop adding features.
  • I can’t bring myself to sit at a restaurant. Especially when most people aren’t wearing masks.
  • I’d prefer to be near a beach, walking around Joburg suburbs gets old fast.
  • I have cut out most junk food, but do indulge in some new favorite places that deliver on occasion.
  • Still open to mentoring Black Designers if anyone wants my help.
  • Web Stories are the new search gold. Google it.
  • I’d like to take a moment to send my condolences to everyone who has left us and those who have lost their loved ones due to the pandemic.
  • I’ve started watching Formula 1 and MotoGP again after quite a few years and along with UFC has become my weekend entertainment.
  • Someone did something really kind for me the other day and it really lifted my spirits. If you can help someone, please do.
  • You don’t have to Zoom call everything.
  • Advertising has changed. Make it useful, rather than wow them.
  • Mad respect for the companies still taking care of their people.
  • The virus can be beaten, just stay the fuck at home.
  • We’re all going through the most, reach out to your people. You’re not alone.
  • I have been training at home, doubt I’ll run back to gym once they reopen, but I am excited about a proper workout at the gym.
  • Morning routine is drinking tea and sitting in the sun.
  • It’s not been a freezing winter in Joburg, but it’s colder in my apartment than outside.
  • Not sure if lockdown will end any time soon, hope you get used to that idea.
  • Call an old friend. Don’t text them. Actually have a proper conversation. Its a treat.
  • Don’t beat yourself if you never learned to code, write a book or bake sour dow. Be gentle with yourself.
  • Keep building your immune system.
  • Thanks to all the healthcare workers who have been risking everything to take care of others.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Appreciate hearing stories of people who have managed to find success through all of this.
  • Wishing you all the best. Stay healthy. Be happy.
