The past few weeks have been particularly challenging. It has left me feeling pretty sad. It has made it hard to do much. But I wanted to remember them. There have been quite a few people I’ve heard who left us. But. these three recently were really close to me.

My best friend’s mom, I called her Ouma. To others, she was Aunty Lil. She was like a second mother to me. Was always having to deal with the trouble I got myself into. She always stood up for me. She always made me feel at home. She baked the most amazing treats and even made me a dragon birthday cake once. She helped me get to work when I was younger. She believed in me and encouraged my creativity. She also called me out on my bullshit. I will miss her deeply.

Leo approached me after I gave a talk at a design conference. He told me he wanted to work for me some day. I hired him as soon as I could. We often spoke about accessibility. Something his personal experience had given him purpose to fix. I needed him on my team. He had such a great attitude. I miss my time spent with Leo at the office.

Alfred was the founder and CEO of Stay Ulo. Only 26 years young. Wise beyond his years. We worked together recently to bring his vision to life. It was an honour designing his brand. His passion and drive were everything. He was changing the hospitality industry with his short-term rentals. I appreciated working with him and I’m proud of what we did together.

If I’ve been quiet. This is why. These beautiful people made an impact on my life. They were taken suddenly.

May you rest in peace.
