Forgot to blog … again

I am rusty clearly, I totally forgot to blog, which is shameful given that all I need to do is type some words and here I quite ambitiously want to start daily vlogging. Still, the latter is really appealing for me, which I hope to outline in a video soon. Apologies readers, I will try and make blogging more consistent.

Stay cool ✌️

Oops … I forgot to blog

It was my intention to blog every day this year and already I forgot. Been focussed on whether or not to vlog daily, and simply didn’t smash the keyboard. I will try harder.

Stay cool ✌️

Swiss Miss

Just over a year ago while attending Adobe’s 99u conference in New York, I had the privilege of meeting one of my favorite bloggers, Tina Roth Eisenberg, who is not only the genius behind Creative Mornings, Tattly and other great business ideas that follow her passion for design and all things Swiss, but the author of one of my favorite blogs, Swiss Miss.

After she delivered one of the kindest and loving talks of the conference, I just had to go introduce myself. While a little awkward, I got the sense she is as introverted as I am, we had quick catchup where I got to tell her what a real fan I was of her daily blog, which I have honestly been reading for well over a decade.

If you want a daily dose of inspiration, from one of the most in touch, human voices in our industry, then, do make your way over to Tina’s blog, Swiss Miss.

I’ve started vlogging

I’ve started a YouTube channel and have been making these little videos. I guess they’re vlogs. I’m learning as I go. I’ve really made a lot of mistakes, but it’s a lot of fun and challenging me. I needed a new project, something out of my comfort zone and creating content in this way seemed right. I have built enough portfolio sites, my first portfolio was done back in 2000 and I’d written my first blog post by 2004, which I’m also tired of doing. Social networks mostly bore me, so becoming a YouTuber seems like a thing to do, well I guess try.

The hardest part for me is capturing footage to tell my story. I’m not one for sticking to a script, so I’d likely not do very well thought out posts and have the level of storytelling like Casey Neistat, the cinematography of Peter McKinnon and I certainly don’t have the adventures of Fun for Louis. Still, I’m much more of a creative thinker, a design leader and I’m me, which if I look back on my time on this planet, I’ve always managed to attract an interesting bunch of people around me. So let us see where this goes.

I’ll likely not blog often, if at all, but I have no intention of pulling this site down anytime soon. However your support is most welcome and I’d appreciate it if you would subscribe, like, share and leave a comment.

Do more in 2018

2017 was a really great year, full of challenges, full of adventure and full of fun. I wanted to do a recap, cause I did amazing things, like hot air balloon, go to New York, camp at the coast and so much more, but I never seemed to find the time or the focus. Truth is I really don’t capture things well. I never did do a blog post about living in Hong Kong in 2015 and I have not updated my portfolio in years. I’m just not as excited about blogging as used to be. I am considering vlogging, even if I entertain my single subscriber on YouTube, but I feel a huge need to be more creative, and really make stuff. Experiment with new media etc.

But that’s, not all this post is about, I want to travel more, do more, love more and be more, just like in 2017, but even more than that. So while I will not be shutting my blog down, or likely to not update my portfolio of professional work, I might start documenting all my experiments, my travels as a creative outlet and all the interesting new things I do in my awkwardly interesting life. Yes, I am interesting, I am awesome, even if I’m the only one who thinks so, so in 2018, I’m gonna do more sharing of the stuff I do, but in a new and interesting way.

2017 Site Maintenance

It’s been ages since I blogged properly, but I have every intention of sharing loads more with you all. I have started doing some site maintenance. Currently, I’m playing with adding some gradients to all the pages and posts and also putting my blog at the forefront rather than my work, as I’ve just not got much content to show there, as well as how I share my posts across social channels. I have had a super 2017 and look forward to doing a recap over the next few days and sharing everything I have been doing. So thanks for understanding, and please check back soon for some updates to the site and a recap of the past year.

It’s funny to think that 10 years ago, I was actively blogging on this domain for over a year, writing badly, covering things I discovered online and of course some random thoughts. I was going through captured pages of my site on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

I’m on the verge of significantly changing the course of my career and oddly I predict I’ll be blogging a lot more than I will be updating the work in my portfolio. It seems the learnings I have will be more meaningful than the creative opportunities I have had. I do look forward to sharing, and hope that I will improve my writing as it becomes my new outlet for creative expression. I’m not sure yet whether it means a re-design of this site, but I am thinking a focus on my posts should take preference to my portfolio, so lets make that more easily accessible to visitors.

A big thanks to everyone who has visited the site over the past 10+ years, I know I have a very little voice in the grander scheme of things, but hopefully I have had something to contribute to you all out there. Heres to another 10 years!

Digital Copywriting

One of things I got to really appreciate while working at Ogilvy was the role of Copywriters. They pair Copywriters and Art Directors to not only visualise ideas, but to put it into words. The copywriters are also quite theatrical and can really pitch an idea, putting into words what Art Directors only know how to say with pictures.

In the digital industry, copywriters are few and far between and I believe they are a crucial addition to any team. Content is king and given that data is made up by text, it just makes perfect sense to have someone on board who can string a sentence together. Below is a list of the type of qualities we look for when hiring a Digital Copywriter

  • Write for search engines
  • Short one liners for banners etc
  • Edit large amounts of copy for sites
  • Explain what seems like technology overload for technophobes
  • Think and write conceptually
  • Spelling & Grammar
  • Write for social platforms like Twitter
  • Understand the personality of different brands and write accordingly
  • Be able to offer options

There aren’t many (if any) Digital Creative Directors who have a copywriting background, so giving a variety of options will help as it makes it easier if there is choice. Your CD will narrow the choice down to present to clients. Being a blogger does not make you a copywriter any more than a social media ‘expert’, so if you can, get some formal training, work with traditional agency writers who you can learn from and then read lots, so you know a little about everything and can hold your own when it comes to cutting edge technology and campaigns. There aren’t many Digital Copywriters, so if you can learn this skill, you could be in very high demand.
