Free Year in NYC

Million Dollar Listing realtor Ryan Serhant gave away a free year in NYC recently. He had a call to entry earlier in the year, which I did enter, 28k+ people sent entries and he recently announced the winner.

What I found interesting and I take it as a lesson, is that they chose someone who had a game plan, who is already doing incredible things, who made a real effort.

Much respect to Ryan for this generous give away and best of luck to Sam. Enjoy your free year in NYC!

Sustainable Web Manifesto

If the Internet was a country, it would be the 6th largest polluter

I’m not sure how, but given that I have spent the larger part of my career online, I feel I need to do my part to contribute to a more sustainable internet.

I’m not sure if that means I need to clean up my social media feed, change my hosting provider, post responsibly or reduce my online footprint (if there is such a thing), but I want to do something, so that our online world doesn’t go through what the real world does, while at the same time ensuring that the internet doesn;t damage the real world too.

Join me in signing the manifesto today!

Live the Adventure

As I’m planning a little getaway over new years along the coast, I wanted to tell you about this inspiring fella Louis who did this awesome World Flight with his mate JP. I’m quite new to vlogging, and while I have entertained the idea, I am kinda loving stuff like this, rather than watching regular TV. Louis has a little company called Live the Adventure, which has an HQ in Cape Town, of all places, so be sure to check them out. Inspiring stuff, thanks for sharing your fun, Louis.

Peace out, enjoy life and live the adventure, boom!

41 Charity Water Campaign

https://youtu.be/UE9UvT5ujyg

I will be celebrating my Birthday this Sunday and it’s my 20th 21, or more commonly known as 41. So in the spirit of things, I thought I’d invite you to all contribute to my Charity Water birthday campaign and donate towards a worthy cause instead of either not knowing to get me or not getting me anything. Donate at least $4.10 to help provide water for those you don’t have access to fresh water. You don’t have to, but it would be pretty fucken cool if you did.

Thank you!

Make it easy to give

I have a confession. I’m not very good or even inclined to go and do something to help those less fortunate than me, when it’s out of my set of skills. Time is something I just don’t have, even when it seems like I do nothing. But I am willing to give, but not always in a position to do so, but not for the reasons you might think. I will literally give you the shirt on my back, (if not money) but what I can’t do, is get the shirt to you. I’m currently financially struggling, but despite this, I know there are people a lot less fortunate than myself, so if it means going into my wardrobe and pulling out some old clothes and shoes, or donating furniture that I hardly use, I will do it. Despite no evidence of it coming back to me, I believe in giving. So if I have any advice to give anyone who is asking for help with their cause, please make it easy. I have always donated to charitywater.org because they always made it easy for me to campaign, for them. I remember seeing this salvation army campaign while I was in Hong Kong last year and to me it’s just brilliant (if not just some agency scam).

If you want people to donate to you, then offer to send packaging, a drop off point or someone to collect the goods. I literally will give everything I can, if you can just make it easy to give.

Legocy

Today is Mandela Day in which we celebrate on  Nelson Mandela’s birthday every year. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to share with you the Legocy project which I had a hand in earlier this year.

In support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, YouTube asked agencies to enter a competition by making a short film as a tribute to Nelson Mandela. The smart folk at Quirk Jozi came up with doing a short Lego stop frame animation to one of Nelson Mandela’s most famous speeches. The hope is to get enough signatures and send a request to Lego to make a Freedom Fighters Lego set. As I have been collecting Lego for a personal project for a while, I was asked to help with the cast, and of course being such a huge Lego fan, I jumped at the opportunity to have a play date with the team at Quirk. In addition I helped build them a responsive one-page site, provided the domain and hosting. They won the competition, and below is the end product.

Donate to Charity Water

My birthday is just around the corner and I will be turning 38. This year I’m celebrating my birthday differently. I don’t want presents or drinks. I want clean water.

Women and children around the world walk hours every day to collect water for their families. And the worst part? The water they collect can make them really sick. Terrible right? Well, we can actually do something about it. Just $20 can give a person clean water to drink.

I can’t think of a better birthday gift.

My target is to meet $380 this year, so if you could please donate at least $38, I would be eternally grateful.
More information about my Charity Water campaign can be found at http://my.charitywater.org/38

Thank you!

Social Responsibility

I stumbled upon some dirty laundry being aired on a friends Facebook wall today and I was shocked to learn things about their current behavior. There are two sides to every story and I’m a firm believer that I have no right to pass judgement on anyone. But what this does make me conscious of is the fact that this is a public forum and what you say can be read by pretty much everyone. Friends, family, clients, employers etc can all read this and will certainly judge you by this. I certainly use platforms like Facebook and Twitter to find out more about the people I interview, work with or meet. So if I have any advice, it’s to be responsible of your social profile.

  • Keep your password to yourself, you don’t want someone you might be fighting with posting stuff on your wall.
  • Edit the things you say. What might seem funny in the moment might be perceived as something else by people who might not appreciate your special brand of humour
  • Understand and set your privacy settings. If you’re going through some stuff, keep things private.
  • Be responsible for your actions outside of social media, it’s easy for people who recognise you to spot you in the background in photos and drunken photos will not impress future employers as much as you think. People can also post on your wall or on their own, using your name will show up in all your friends walls.
  • Monitor your accounts frequently to stay aware of your online reputation.
  • If you are going to swear, make sure you sign up to @swearbox so that you can give donate to a worthy cause to make up for your bad language.
